Overview 

At some point, you will need to update an assignment. If the assignment is in a class template, you should be able to easily do this as there are no students completing assignments in a template. However, if the assignment you need to update is already in a Class and students have started the assignment, you may need to take additional steps to make changes to the assignment available to your students.

NOTE: Changing the assignment type is not possible after students have started the assignment.

Track Assignment 

1. If you need to change the timesheet in the assignment (ex. an Internship track was associated with your Practicum track assignment) and a student has already started that assignment, the word “Track” will be italicized in the Assignment Builder.

   

2. In this case, the best course of action is to:

   1. Copy the assignment, using the copy button to the far right of the assignment name. Be sure to indicate it is NEW in the name of the assignment. You can remove the “(Copy)” that will be automatically added to the assignment name.

   2. In the newly copied assignment, change the "track to be used" to the track you want students to use instead. You will notice that the word “Track” is no longer italicized.

      

       

   3. Rename the “old” assignment to indicate students should no longer use it.

3. Let your students know this has been updated. Any students who have completed the old track assignment will need to “Start” the new track assignment to be assigned a copy of the new time track. If they entered any hours on the old track they will also want to “move” their time entries from the old track to the new one.

Report Assignment 

1. If you need to change a report assignment and a student has already “started” that assignment, there will be italicized portions that you cannot update: Assignment type, Report to be used, Required or optional, and Completed by.

   

2. If you need to update one of the italicized portions, the best course of action is to:

   1. Copy the assignment, indicating it is NEW in the name of the assignment. You can remove the "(Copy)" that will be automatically added to the assignment name.

   2. In the copied assignment, you can now change the assignment settings.

   3. Rename the “old” assignment to indicate the students should no longer use it.

3. Let your students know this has been updated and whether they need to run the new report to replace the old one.

Upload Assignment 

1. The most common updates to an upload assignment would be who the upload is completed by, whether it is required, or what document type the upload should be tagged as.

   

2. To correct the document type, you can simply change it, since it is still blue and is not italicized.

3. If you need to update whether the upload is required or optional or if you need to change who does the upload:

   1. Copy the assignment, indicating it is NEW in the name of the assignment. You can remove the “(Copy)” that will be automatically added to the assignment name.

   2. In the copied assignment, you can now change the assignment settings.

   3. Rename the “old” assignment to indicate the students should no longer use it.

4. Let your students know this has been updated and that they need to complete the new assignment to ensure that the document is either completed as required, tagged as needed, or uploaded by the correct individual.

Offline Assignment 

1. Offline assignments are the easiest to update, but also the least likely to require changes.

   

2. If you need to make the assignment only required for specific students and it is “required for all assignees”, you can click on the “assigned to all class/groups members”, uncheck the box, and enter specific students in the list.

3. If you need to make the assignment optional for every student or required for every student (if it was originally marked optional):

   1. Copy the assignment, indicating it is NEW in the name of the assignment. You can remove the “(Copy)” that will be automatically added to the assignment name.

   2. In the copied assignment, you can now update the assignment settings.

   3. Rename the “old” assignment to indicate the students should no longer use it.

4. Let your students know this has been updated.

Form Assignment 

1. If you need to change a form assignment and a student has already “started” that assignment, there will be italicized portions that you cannot update: Assignment type, Form to be used, Required or optional, and Completed by.
