LTI integration Issues between Experiential Learning Cloud and Learning Management Systems

Common LTI Errors

ERROR #1 - Page with Sad Face Emoji

Issue: 

• Your LMS is attempting to open the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI tool within the LMS itself and not in a new tab/window

Solution:

1. Within your LMS course, locate the assignment/content that contains the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI tool
2. Open the settings
3. Ensure that the option to Load the tool in a new tab/window is enabled
   • If you need assistance locating this setting, reach out to your LMS Administrator for guidance
4. If the setting has been enabled and you are still experiencing this issue, please ask the Lumi AI Assistant by going to the Support Resources Page and clicking on the appropriate product name. If the assistant can't help, a case will be created for you.

ERROR #2: Could not find course template ________ for auto provisioning

Issue:

• Experiential Learning Cloud is unable to locate a corresponding class template in your Experiential Learning Cloud database using the course information being sent from your LMS
• There are two potential causes for this issue:
  • You do not have a corresponding class template created in your Experiential Learning Cloud database for your LMS course
  • You have a corresponding class template in your Experiential Learning Cloud database, but the formatting of the course number on the class template is different from what your LMS sends to Experiential Learning Cloud

Solution:

1. Log into your Experiential Learning Cloud database and confirm that a corresponding class template exists for the LMS course being used with the LTI integration
   1. If a class template does not exist, create one by following the instructions here
   2. If a class template does exist, continue to Step 2
2. Expand the corresponding class template and pull up the error message you received
3. In the class template, locate the Course number: field
4. Confirm that the course number in the class template exactly matches the course number provided in the error message, including the formatting
   • For example: The error message pictured above is telling us that Experiential Learning Cloud cannot find a matching class template for COUN-1000 (which is the course number sent from your LMS). Assuming that the corresponding class template exists, it is likely that the course number is formatted incorrectly, such as COUN1000 or COUN 1000. Since the error message shows us that the course number in the LMS is COUN-1000, the course number on the class template needs to be changed to COUN-1000 to match with the LMS course.
5. If necessary, fix the course number on the class template so that it matches the course number in your LMS (shown in the error message)
6. If you are still being prompted with the same error message after making the corrections outlined in this step, please submit a ticket to the Experiential Learning Cloud Support Team

The LTI parameter _____________ did not match regular expression "____"

 LTI Integration & Regular Expressions

When setting up your LTI integration, we work with your LMS Administrator to create regular expressions (tiny code rules) that tell Experiential Learning Cloud how to read course details (number, name, section, term) from your LMS.

• These expressions are customized to your LMS’s course naming conventions.

• If naming conventions change, the expressions must be updated.

Example:

• Configured format: FALL24-COUN-1000-01: Intro to Counseling

• Received format: FALL24-COUN-1000-01-Intro to Counseling

• The difference (colon + space vs. dash) prevents the system from recognizing the course, triggering an error.

Issue:

• The course information being sent to Experiential Learning Cloud from your LMS is in a different format than what we initially configured for your LTI integration
  
• There are two potential causes for this issue:
  • The course information in a specific LMS course has been edited and now deviates from the standard naming conventions of course information used across your institution's LMS
  • The standard naming conventions of course information has changed for all courses in your institution's LMS

Solution:

1. Open the course settings within your LMS
2. Review the course information and verify that it is formatted in the exact same way as the other courses in your LMS
   • If you need assistance with this, reach out to your LMS Administrator for guidance
3. If the naming conventions for this course do not match the other courses in your LMS, adjust the naming conventions in this course accordingly to match the others in your LMS
   
4. If the naming conventions for this course do match the other courses in your LMS, it is likely that the standard naming conventions for all courses in your LMS have been updated, but it is recommended that you verify this with your LMS Administrator
   1. Upon confirming that the standard naming conventions of course information has been changed across your LMS, please ask the Lumi AI Assistant to create a case (see link above) and let it know that the course naming conventions in your LMS have changed so we can create new "regular expressions" for you as quickly as possible.

Other Common LTI Issues

I am an instructor, but was added as a student to my Experiential Learning Cloud course...

LTI Integration & Role Mapping

When configuring your LTI integration, we set up role mapping for faculty roles. This tells Experiential Learning Cloud which role to assign you in the course created via LTI based on your LMS course role.

• • Experiential Learning Cloud only checks the role within the specific LMS course, not your overall LMS account role(s).

  • If you don’t have a faculty role in the LMS course, Experiential Learning Cloud will default to adding you as a student.

Solution:

1. Verify that you have an instructor, administrator, or other faculty role assigned to you in your LMS course
2. If you do not have a faculty role assigned to you within your LMS course, work with your LMS Administrator on getting assigned a faculty role in the course
   
   1. Upon getting assigned a faculty role in your LMS course, remove yourself from the Experiential Learning Cloud course of which you have been added as a student and click the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI tool in your LMS course again
3. If you do have a faculty role assigned to you within your LMS course, it is likely that the role you have been assigned has not been "mapped" in your Experiential Learning Cloud database
   
   1. Please ask the Lumi AI Assistant to create a case by going to the Support Resources Page and clicking on the appropriate product name. Include in your request that we update the "role mapping" for your LTI integration in Experiential Learning Cloud

I have the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI tool in my LMS course, but I am missing students/instructors from my Experiential Learning Cloud course...

Overview:

• In order for users to be added to a Experiential Learning Cloud course via the LTI integration, each user must click the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI tool within your LMS course

Solution:

1. Instruct your students & faculty to click the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI tool within every course they are currently enrolled in

I am seeing duplicate course sections in my Experiential Learning Cloud database...

Overview:

• When a course section is created in Experiential Learning Cloud via the LTI integration, the course information (course number, name, section, & term) that automatically populates is pulled directly from your LMS
• If you edit any of the course information listed above, it will no longer be linked to your LMS course, as it will no longer match the exact course information being provided by your LMS
  • This results in a duplicate course section being created in Experiential Learning Cloud with the "correct" course information your LMS is sending over the next time a user clicks the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI tool

Solution:

1. Within the Program Management | Users > Groups workspace, locate the course with duplicate sections
   
2. Identify the course that has been created using the exact information from your LMS course and the course that has had its information edited
3. Review both courses to see what users have been added to them and whether or not students have been completing assignments in one or both courses
4. Based on your findings, use your best judgement to move forward with one of the options below:
   1. OPTION A: Recommended if students are actively completing assignments in the original course that has been edited, but not the duplicate course
      1. Expand this course as well as the duplicate course created with the LMS course information
         
      2. Within the Details tab of the original course, replace any course information that has been edited with what is provided in the duplicate course that contains the LMS course information (you can simply copy & paste these values) so that it is an exact match
      3. Inactivate the duplicate course that students are not using
         
      4. Instruct any users that had been added to the duplicate course (which you have just inactivated) to click the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI tool again so they are added to the correct course
   2. OPTION B: Recommended if students are actively completing assignments in the duplicate course, but not the original course that has been edited
      1. Simply inactivate the original course that has had its information edited
   3. OPTION C: Recommended if students are actively completing assignments in both courses
      1. Locate the original course that has had its information edited
         
      2. Follow the instructions in bottom section of this article to move the students and their assignments from this course to the duplicate course that was created using the LMS course information
      3. Inactivate the original course that has had its information edited

I am seeing duplicate accounts in my Experiential Learning Cloud database...

Overview:

• By default, usernames in Experiential Learning Cloud are set to the user's email address sent over from your LMS 
• If the formatting of your email addresses changes in your LMS, Experiential Learning Cloud will not recognize when an existing user clicks the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI link if a user's email addresses between their Experiential Learning Cloud and LMS accounts are different. Instead, Experiential Learning Cloud recognizes them as a new user, thus creating a duplicate account for the user.

Solution:

1. Immediately instruct your students and faculty to not click the Experiential Learning Cloud LTI link in their course OR remove/hide the LTI link from the course entirely
2. Contact your LMS administrator to confirm whether or not users' email addresses within your LMS have recently changed
3. Please ask the Lumi AI Assistant to create a case by going to the Support Resources Page and clicking on the appropriate product name. Provide your IT contact information
4. Wait for an Integrations Specialist to contact you within 1-3 business days to begin resolving the issue
5. In the meantime, instruct your students and faculty to access Experiential Learning Cloud through your database's login page with their usernames and passwords
   1. If any users forgot their password or never set one up, provide them with our password reset article
