Registry Access Error and Preference Loss

Problem
In @RISK 8.0–8.1.1 or other DecisionTools add-ins version 8.1.1 or earlier, you may see the message “Access to the registry key… is denied” when changing preferences, or changes to preferences and settings may not be remembered.

Cause
This occurs if the first time any DecisionTools add-in was run, it was launched as administrator (with elevated privileges). Registry keys created with elevation are restricted and cannot be modified by non-elevated sessions, causing error messages or silent failure to save settings. This issue only appears when running without elevation; it does not occur on an administrator account.

Fix in Version 8.2
The problem was resolved in all products with version 8.2.

Workarounds

Option 1: Continue to run as administrator
You can keep launching the add-ins with elevated privileges to avoid the error, though this may be inconvenient.

Option 2: Reset the registry

1. Close Excel and all DecisionTools Suite software.

2. Open the Registry Editor: Start → Run → type REGEDIT → OK.

3. Locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palisade.

4. Right-click the Palisade key and select Rename. Rename it to Palisade-Old.

   • Renaming instead of deleting allows restoration if needed.

5. Reopen the software without elevation. The keys will be recreated with correct non-elevated permissions.

Notes

• You will lose any previously configured preferences, defaults, or application settings.

• You may need to reselect your license in the License Manager by clicking Select License and choosing your license.
