How to Run and Modify the Risk Trend Report

 

Overview

The Risk Trend Report tracks how risk data changes over time for a selected folder.

It is included as a ready-to-use template (Risk_Trend_Report.zip) and can be uploaded to Risk Controller and run immediately.

Limited adjustments to the plotted metric can be made by editing the sub report files in Jaspersoft Studio.

 

What the Trend Report Displays

• A line chart showing the total aggregated metric (default: Current Factored Mean Cost) at each point in the selected date range
• A histogram showing risk counts by current score rating at each date point
• Separate pages for Threats/Issues and Opportunities
• Risks that changed type during the period appear on both relevant chart pages
• Cost values are shown in the database base unit (unit weighting 1)
• Chart colors match the scoring system configured in Risk Controller

Note: Trend reports should only be published to My Folders in Risk Controller, not to shared or global folder views.

 

Run the Trend Report in Risk Controller

• Navigate to the relevant folder in Risk Controller.
• Open the Reports menu and select Risk Trend.
• Complete the report options:

    Period end date: The end date for the trend period

    Reporting interval: Days, Weeks, Months, Quarters, or Years

    Number of periods: How many intervals to include, counting back from the first day of the current month

    Subtitle: Optional free text to display near the top of the report

    Report format: Select the required output format (PDF, DOCX, etc.)

• Click Run. The report generates and downloads when complete.

 

Preview the Trend Report in Jaspersoft Studio

• Import Risk_Trend_Report.zip into Jaspersoft Studio (see the Import/Export article).
• Open Risk_trend_report.jrxml in Design mode.
• In the Outline panel, navigate to Parameters > FOLDER_ID.
• In the Default Value Expression field, enter the numeric ID of the folder to preview against.
• Click Preview and complete the report option prompts.

Note: Before saving and uploading to Risk Controller, the Default Value Expression for FOLDER_ID must be cleared (left blank). If a value remains, the report will always run against that folder regardless of the user's selection at runtime.

 

Modify the Plotted Metric

The default metric is Current Factored Mean Cost.

To change what is plotted:

1. Open the relevant sub report:
   1. Risks_sub_chart.jrxml (Threats and Issues page) or Opportunities-sub-chart.jrxml (Opportunities page).
2. In Design view, navigate to: Summary > Multi Axis > Line Plot > Dataset > Category Series.
3. In the Properties panel, click the expression editor icon next to Value Expression.
4. Replace the existing expression with one of the supported alternatives:
   1. Current Factored Mean Cost (default): java.lang.Math.abs($F{folder_histTotalFactoredMeanCost})
   2. Current Mean Cost:     java.lang.Math.abs($F{folder_histTotalMeanCost})
   3. Count of open risks: $F{folder_histOpenCount}
   4. Count of retired risks: $F{folder_histClosedCount}
5. Click Finish and Save.
6. Compile all .jrxml files (right-click > Compile Report) and re-export.
7. Upload the updated template to Risk Controller.

 

Best Practices

• Always keep the original shipped Risk_Trend_Report.zip as a reference before making modifications.
• Create a renamed copy of the template before editing
  • Do not modify the original directly.
• Test modifications by previewing in Jaspersoft Studio with a known FOLDER_ID before uploading.
• Confirm the FOLDER_ID Default Value Expression is blank before every upload.

 

Troubleshooting

• Trend report always runs against the same folder:
  • The FOLDER_ID parameter still has a Default Value Expression set.
  • Clear the value, recompile, and re-upload.
• No data for certain time periods:
  • No risks existed in the selected folder on that historical date. This is expected behaviour.
• Line chart shows negative values:
  • The java.lang.Math.abs() wrapper may be missing from the Value Expression.
  • Add it around the field reference.
