LTI Integration for Auto-Provisioning

Overview

LTI Integration is a connection between the Learning Management System (BlackBoard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle) and the Experiential Learning Cloud.

This connection allows for the functionality listed below:

Creating course sections each semester automatically when the link is clicked in the LMS
Creating a new user automatically in Experiential Learning Cloud when they click the link in the LMS
Associating that user with the correct program(s) and sub-program(s) when they click the link in the LMS
Placing that user into the correct course section each semester when they click the link in the LMS
Creating a supervision rule for faculty over a course section when they click the link in the LMS

Common Terms

LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability)	a standard put out by IMS Global Learning Consortium
External Tool Provider	a type of LTI tool (Experiential Learning Cloud falls under this category)
LTI URL	the URL used to create the external tool
Placement	name for the link added to a course in LMS which launches Experiential Learning Cloud and sends the necessary AP information
Auto-Provisioning	process by which users, courses, program and sub-program associations, and supervision relationships are created through the launch of the External Tool UR

Why would I want LTI Integration?

By automating many of the tasks you would otherwise have to perform manually in Experiential Learning Cloud (User Creation, User Program/Sub-Program Association, Course Creation, Student/Course Association, Faculty/Course Supervision) you save time and insure accuracy. In addition by turning your LMS into the Source of Truth for users and courses, you insure this data in Experiential Learning Cloud is accurate.

What is involved in setting up an Integration?

Your Account Manager can connect you with an Integrations Specialist who will work with you and your LMS Administrator or other IT staff to complete the setup, then demo how it works for you.

We offer a SIS (Student Information System, Registration System) integration with systems such as Banner and Jenzabar that are capable of outputting the necessary data to a specific file format.

SIS integration offers more powerful options but at a cost of significantly higher up front effort and work on your end.
- Update student/course associations at any time - useful to manage add/change/drop
- Manage users with more detailed information than Auto Provisioning (demographic, address, etc.)
- One way integration only

Why would I choose LTI/Auto-Provisioning over SIS?

Auto Provisioning offers the simplest setup with the least amount of time and effort needed from faculty and IT staff and will meet 99% of most university's needs. If you want extra fine control and management and are willing to put in the extra time and effort both up front and on a continuing basis to insure data integrity, SIS is a better alternative.

What if I want some of the power of SIS but the ease of LTI?

We can currently offer both at once, however, it is not advisable as our system will accept data from both equally.

We have future plans to implement a feature called Rostering which allows the Auto-Provisioning process through LTI to AUTOMATICALLY create/update all users in a course when the link is clicked in LMS.
