Error Calling Macro in @RISK or Evolver

Question:
On the Macros tab of my model settings, I list one or more macros to be called during a simulation or optimization. But when I click Start, I get this popup:

Error calling the macro "..."

I’ve checked that the macro name is spelled correctly. What’s wrong?

Answer:
This issue is usually related to scoping in Excel. When @RISK or Evolver calls a macro by name, Excel searches for it in several locations. Depending on where the macro is placed, its name alone may not be enough for Excel to locate it.

Best Practices to Avoid This Error:

1. Place the macro in a standard module

   • In the Visual Basic Editor, right-click the workbook name and select Insert » Module.

   • Do not place the macro inside a worksheet or workbook object.

2. Fully qualify the macro name

   • On the Macros tab of the model settings, use the form:

     'WorkbookName.xlsm'!MacroName
     

   • Full qualification is usually optional but sometimes required.

3. Ensure it is a Sub, not a Function

   • Only Sub procedures can be called automatically by @RISK or Evolver. Functions will not work.
