Permission Emulation

Overview

Permission Emulation in SharpCloud allows Story Owners and Creators to view a story exactly as it would appear to other user roles. This helps ensure the correct experience, access level, and functionality are presented to different audiences before sharing.

By emulating permissions, you can validate what users can see and do—without needing to log in as another user.

How to Use Permission Emulation

1. Locate the permission level indicator (e.g., [OWNER] or [CREATOR]) next to the story name in the main toolbar

2. Click the permission label to open the dropdown menu

3. Select the role you want to emulate

Available emulation options:

• Collaborator

• Read-only

The story will immediately update to reflect the selected role’s permissions.

Viewer Types

• Collaborator

  • Can edit data (e.g., update attributes, add content)

  • Cannot change story structure (e.g., views, layouts)

  • Has access to Forms created by Owners/Creators

• Read-only

  • Can view and explore the story

  • Cannot make edits

  • Access is typically granted via sharing, teams, or directory access

  • Requires a SharpCloud account

Stopping Emulation

To exit emulation mode:

• Click the permission level indicator again

• The story will revert to your original access level

Benefits of Permission Emulation

• Verify what different users can see and interact with

• Ensure sensitive data or controls are appropriately restricted

• Test forms and collaboration features before sharing

• Improve overall user experience and governance

Notes

• Available only to Story Owners and Creators

• Changes are temporary and for viewing purposes only

• Does not affect actual user permissions or access
