NVivo AI Cloud: Memos

Memos are where you do your analytic writing in NVivo AI Cloud: the notes, interpretations, and emerging findings you build up alongside your documents and codes. Each memo is a titled, rich-text document that you can connect to the sources and codes it draws on, so the reasoning behind your analysis stays linked to the evidence it rests on.

Create a memo

Create a memo whenever you want to record an interpretation, a working hypothesis, or a finding. A new memo needs nothing more than a title: titles are trimmed of surrounding spaces and capped in length, and you can leave a memo untitled if you prefer. Every memo has a type, and the default type is research.

Titles must be unique within a project, compared case-insensitively, so "Findings" and "Findings " cannot both exist and read identically. NVivo AI Cloud creates some memos for you: summary memos generated as your documents and topics are processed, and memos that AURA writes when you approve its save action. These appear in a special folder called "AURA memos" so you can keep them separate from your own memos.

The memo body is a rich-text document, so you can structure your writing with paragraphs and formatting as you go. As you write, you can cite excerpts from your sources; NVivo AI Cloud keeps track of those citations so they can be resolved later, for example when you export.

Link sources or codes to a memo

Linking a source to a memo records which documents the memo draws on and lets you see, from the memo, exactly which sources are connected to it. You add and remove source links as a single change: supply the sources to add and the sources to remove together, and NVivo AI Cloud applies both. You can include many sources in one operation, up to a batch limit.

Linking codes works the same way as linking sources, and records which codes a memo is about. Add and remove codes in one operation, up to the same batch limit. Only live codes from the current project are linked.

Each linked code is shown with its name and color next to the memo, and the connection is visible from the code's side as well, so you can find every memo linked to a given code.

Exporting a memo to Word

Export a memo when you want to share it or archive it outside NVivo AI Cloud. The memo is written to a Word (.docx) file that carries the memo's title, type, creation date, author name, and its linked sources and codes. Excerpt citations in the body are resolved into numbered Word footnotes in the exported file.

Deleting a memo

Delete a memo you no longer need. Deletion is a soft delete: the memo is removed from the panel and from searches, and its excerpt-citation backlinks are cleared so they no longer point at it.
