Copying Class Templates with Reviewer Substitution

Overview
Class templates let you build assignments once and copy them to multiple class sections, preserving workflows, reviewers, and review steps.

• Reviewer substitution automatically replaces the template’s reviewer with the instructor of the target class when you copy the template.

Why use templates

• Save time by avoiding repeated setup for each section/term.
• Ensure consistent assignment structure and routing across classes.
• Preserve reviewers and approval workflows via automatic substitution.

Best practice
Assign a supervisor/reviewer to each class template before copying.

This ensures review steps are configured and will substitute correctly when copied to real classes.

How reviewer substitution works
When you copy a template to a class, the template’s reviewer role is replaced by the instructor (or designated reviewer) of the destination class section.
Example: If you are the reviewer on the template, copies of that template applied to classes where you are the instructor will assign you as the reviewer automatically.

Watch the video and/or read the step by step instructions below for details:

Steps to copy a template (high-level)
1. Create and configure the class template with assignments, tasks, and reviewers.
2. Assign a supervisor/reviewer to the template.
3. Copy the template to the desired class/section.
4. Confirm the instructor/reviewer substitution and verify assignment reviewers and workflows in the copied class.

Notes
Verify reviewer substitution after copying to ensure the correct instructor/reviewer was assigned.
If multiple instructors exist for a class section, confirm which instructor will be used for substitution prior to copying.

By assigning a supervisor to a class template and configuring review steps, you instruct the system to substitute whoever supervises any class copied from that template as the reviewer for those assignments.
