When I move a sheet that contains a PrecisionTree tree to another workbook, Excel creates external links back to the original workbook. Why does this happen?

 

Answer

This happens when cells are copied individually. Excel then rewrites formulas as external references to the source workbook.

To avoid external links, always move or copy the entire sheet, not the cells:

Correct method

• Right-click the sheet tab that contains the tree

• Select Move or Copy

• Choose the destination workbook

• Check Create a copy (if you want to keep the original)

• Click OK

When you move or copy the whole sheet this way, Excel preserves internal references and no external links are created.
