How Can I Store Intermediate @RISK Results Outside Excel During a Simulation?

Question:
While a simulation is running, can I save intermediate results to a file outside the Excel workbook?

Answer:
Yes. All editions of @RISK let you run a user-written macro after each iteration. Professional and Industrial editions also include the Excel Developer Kit (XDK) for full control.

Steps to Export Data

1. Create a Macro to Write Data

   • Write a macro (e.g., WriteToTxtFile()) that saves the desired results to a numbered text file.

2. Create a Main Macro to Run Simulation

   • Set the property to run a macro after each iteration.

   • Reference the macro created in step 1.

   • Open the text file for writing data.

   • Execute the VBA method to start the simulation.

3. Run the Simulation

   • Run the main macro via View » Macros » Run, or assign it to a button for easier execution.

Notes

• Sample workbooks are provided for @RISK 4.x and 7.x (adapt 7.x workbook for 6.x).

• In Excel 2007 or later, enable macros when prompted.

• Use the @RISK VBA functions listed in the online help or Developer Kit for customizing macros.

This approach lets you capture simulation results in real time without storing them in the workbook itself.
