When capturing photos, videos, or audio recordings in SurveyToGo, you may need to verify that an attachment was added successfully or determine the type of files attached to an interview.

This article explains how to retrieve attachment file types and use them for validation purposes.

Retrieve Attachment File Types

Create an array that will store the file types of all attachments in the interview.

This code can be placed in:

• Advanced Scripts

• A question's Start Script

• A question's End Script

var names = GetAttachedFilesNames(); // Get all attached file names

var arrTypes = []; // Array to hold file types

for (var i = 0; i < names.length; i++)

    var type = stringSplit(names[i], '.'); // Split file name at the extension separator

    arrTypes.push(type[1]); // Store the file extension

After running this code, arrTypes will contain the file extensions of all attachments in the interview.

Retrieve Attachment Types for a Specific Question

If you only need the attachments associated with a specific question, use the question-specific overload of GetAttachedFilesNames():

var names = GetAttachedFilesNames(qID);

Where:

• qID is the question index or question reference.

This returns only the file names attached to the specified question.

Using the File Type Array

Once the array has been populated, it can be used to validate the presence of specific attachment types.

For example, to verify that an image was captured, check whether the array contains one of the common image file extensions:

• png

• bmp

• gif

Similarly, you can check for video or audio file extensions to confirm that the required media was attached before allowing the interview to continue.

This approach can be used to validate attachments at either the interview level or the individual question level.
