How to Display Captured Images Dynamically

Overview

SurveyToGo supports two main ways of working with images:

• Adding images to the survey script during design and displaying them during the interview.

• Capturing images in the field during the interview.

This article explains how to combine both methods by capturing images during the interview and displaying those captured images later in questions or answer options.

Using Attachment Sources

An Attachment Source allows you to manage attachments dynamically during an interview. It generates a list of attachments that can later be associated with a specific question.

To create an Attachment Source, go to Advanced > Edit Attachment Sources.

Using the GetAttachedFiles() Function

The GetAttachedFiles() function returns an array of strings. Each string contains the full path of an attachment captured during the interview.

This allows you to access and use captured attachments during runtime.

In the attached sample survey, this function is used inside the Attachment Source scripts.

Displaying Captured Images in a Question Body

To display captured images inside a question body, create an Attachment Source and assign it to the question.

The attached sample survey includes three Attachment Sources:

• dynamicPicture – Retrieves all captured attachments and adds them to the list. When this source is assigned to a question, all attachments in the list are displayed in the question body.

• dynamicIndex – Adds one attachment to the list based on a specific index. In the sample, the attachment at index 2 in the attachment array is added.

• dynamicName – Adds one attachment to the list based on its file name, assuming a custom file name was assigned to the captured attachment through script.

Each Attachment Source supports a different use case, depending on how you want to display the captured images.

To assign an Attachment Source to a question, open the question's Advanced tab and set the AttachmentSource property to the desired source.

Displaying Captured Images as Answer Options

Displaying captured images as answer options works similarly to displaying them in the question body.

The only difference is that you assign the Attachment Source to the AnswerAttachmentSource property.

When used this way, the attachments added to the Attachment Source list are displayed as answer images. Each attachment is assigned to an answer based on its position in the list:

• The first attachment is displayed for the first answer.

• The second attachment is displayed for the second answer.

• And so on.

The attached sample survey demonstrates the different ways to use Attachment Sources to display captured images dynamically.
