Configuring Numeric, Single Choice, Open Ended and Multimedia Questions

Overview

This How To describes configuring the following question types in the Questions Node:

• Numeric
• Single Choice
• Open Ended
• Multimedia

Numeric

Numeric Questions are used for allowing a numeric value input as an answer from the respondent, for example:
"How many children do you have?"

Single Choice

Single Choice Questions are used for allowing a single selection of an answer from a pre-defined set of answers, for example:
"What is your gender?"

Open Ended

Open Ended Questions are used for allowing an open ended text input as an answer from the respondent, for example:
"What is your name?"

Multimedia

Multimedia questions allow you to capture multimedia files such as images, video and sounds with the built-in device multimedia components, for example:
“Please take a picture of the product”

Questions Node

The Question Node is located within the Survey Tree:

• Each question has a set of tabs
• Each tab is used for different configurations.

The View Tab

In the View tab you can configure the basic components of a question, such as its body text and its answers.

1. Question Type & General Settings

In the main panel, you can set:

• • Question type
  • Text color
  • Format

In the bottom panel, you can:

• Clear the questions content
• Add a new question of the same type
•  Navigate between questions

The ‘Question’ Tab

Under the Question tab (within the View tab), you can:

• • Define the Question Body Text
  • Define the surveyors instructions (if needed)

Defining the Question Text

The Question Text field contains the main text that will be displayed to the interviewer or respondent.

The Surveyor Instruction field allows you to provide additional instructions for the interviewer. These instructions are displayed separately from the main question using a different format, making them easy to distinguish from the question text.

Numeric Question Example:

"How many child's do you have?"

The Surveyor Instruction Text:

"SURVEYOR: PLEASE ASK FOR CHILDREN FROM AGE 10 AND ABOVE"

Single Choice Example:

"What is your gender?"

The Surveyor Instruction Text:

"SURVEYOR: DO NOT ASK RESPONDENT"

Open Ended Question Example:

"What is your name?"

The Surveyor Instruction Text:

"SURVEYOR: VERIFY NAME WITH RESPONDENT ID"

Multimedia Question Example

"Please take a picture of the product.”

The Surveyor Instruction Text:

SURVEYOR: Please make sure the front logo of the product is clearly visible in the picture.

• • When the question is displayed, the interviewer will see both the question text and the surveyor instruction, with the instruction formatted differently to distinguish it from the main question.

The Answers Tab

The Answers tab allows you to define the questions answers, set their visual rendering, edit and configure them.

• 'Rendering Mode': Configure the render mode of the question
• 'Lower Limit' – Sets the minimum numeric value optional.
• 'Upper Limit' – Sets the maximum numeric value optional.
• 'Allow only integers' – Allows to input only integer values.
• 'Show scan button' – Set's this question to behave as a QR scanner, scanning only numeric QR codes as the answer of this question.

Defining the Question Answers

You can add answer options in several ways:

• Type the answer text into the Answer field and press Enter or click Add.

• Define an Answer Scale. (For more information, see the Scripting Guide.)

• Use the Multi-Add feature to add or update multiple answers at once. (See How to Add Multiple Answers and Update Them at Once.)

The Index column indicates the position of each answer in the answer list. The index is assigned automatically by the system and is used when referencing answer values in scripts and functions.

Additional actions are available for each answer:

• Edit (Scale) – Opens the selected scale for editing.

• Edit (Answer) – Modifies the text of the selected answer.

• Properties – Configures the properties of the selected answer, such as creating an Other Specify answer.

Rendering Modes

The Rendering panel lets you control how the answer options are displayed to the respondent.

Available rendering options include:

• Displaying answers in multiple columns. (See Rendering Answers in Multiple Columns.)

• Choosing the button or answer display style. (See How to Render Single Choice and Single Choice Grid Questions.)

• Enabling Auto-Advance, which automatically moves to the next question after the respondent selects an answer.

The Special Codes Tab

This tab allows you to add a set of answers in addition to the numeric field – you can select one answer from these answers that will be exclusive and disable the numeric field input.

The Rules Tab

In the rules tab you can define Entrance Rules, Validation Rules and Branching rules.

The Scripts Tab

In the Script's tab you can define your questions Start Script, End Script and enter the advanced scripts for defining more complex functions.

The Variables Tab

The Variables Tab is used for configuring variable related properties of a question.

• Variable Name: is the name of the column representing this question when exporting.
• Missing Value: is the value that this question will get if it was not answered or skipped.
• Short ID: Is a short name that is used for ease of readability and is viewable in the Survey Tree next to the Question Index – Short ID's can also be used as a basis for variable names, please see: How to work with QRef's & Short ID's

Variable names can be referenced instead of Indexes by using the correct functions.

Codings Panel

The Codings Panel allows you to configure the coding of a Single Choice question when exporting:

The Advanced Tab

The advanced tab allows you to set & configure more advanced properties of a question.

Common usages of the Advanced tab:

• Hiding a question from the surveyor.

• Allowing\Disallowing 'No Answer':

• Configuration of Answer Properties, Attachments and Image Properties:

Variables and Exporting Definitions

Open Ended Questions:

• In the 1^st interview the 1^st special code was answered, in the 2^nd interview the name was given.

Multimedia Questions:

• Multimedia questions do not appear as a column in the exported data file.
