Background

The NVivo project file can become fragmented which will impact performance.  As more source files and codes are added, it's important to manage this.

Solution

1. Copy your Mac project file (nvpx file) to your Desktop (for redundancy)
2. If your project is open go to File > Close to save and close your project 
3. Go to the NVivo File tab in the top left Mac menu and click Compact Project. 
   1. The Select Project dialog box opens. 
4. Locate and select your project from the Desktop. 
5. Click Compact. 

Once the compact completes please check if the issue has been resolved.

If the issue persists, you can also merge your project into a blank new project which will rebuild the SQL database: 

1. In NVivo, create a blank new project
2. Click the Import tab and click the Project icon. 
3. The 'Import Project' dialog box appears. 
4. Click Browse and navigate to and select the compacted project file. 
5. Click Import.

If the slowness issue is related to coding or editing a specific file in your project:

1. Create a copy of your project and open it in NVivo Mac  
2. In the project, create a copy of the affected source file from List View  
3. Paste the copy of the file in the same location.
   1. All coding references from the original file should also be present in the copied file.  
4. Delete the original source file.
5. Check to see if the Coding process is faster  

Note: Any queries or reports that referenced the old source (now deleted) in your project will have to be updated to include the new source.
