Missing Titles

Background

If a Citavi Cloud project suddenly has fewer titles than expected, and Citavi shows no error message and doesn't flag the project as damaged, the most likely cause is that the missing titles were never fully saved to the cloud — not that they were deleted afterward.

This mainly happens in two cases:

• The PC switches from sleep (standby) to fully powered off, for example due to an automatic Windows update. This clears the RAM where the data was temporarily cached.
• The project is used on multiple devices, and the internet connection was briefly interrupted during saving without you noticing.

What you can check yourself

Citavi normally saves unsaved changes automatically in a so-called changemap file on the device where they originated. You can find it at:

• Citavi 6: %localappdata%\Swiss Academic Software\Citavi 6\Temp\ and %userprofile%\Documents\Citavi 6\Backup\Changemap\
• Citavi 7: %localappdata%\Swiss Academic Software\Citavi 7\Temp\ and %userprofile%\Documents\Citavi 7\Backup\Changemap\

Reopen your cloud project on the same device where the titles were originally created. If a message appears asking whether to restore unsaved changes, confirm it — this will retroactively transfer the missing titles from the changemap file to the cloud.

If you use the project on multiple devices, check the changemap folder on each device, since the file is only stored locally on the device where the connection was interrupted.

If no "Restore unsaved changes" message appears

Send all files you found in the folders listed above to Citavi Support.

If no changemap file exists

If no such file exists, please also contact Citavi Support. Please have ready:

• • the project key (found under File > This Project > Properties > General)
  • the approximate date/time since when the titles have been missing
  • the device on which the missing titles were originally entered

In some cases, data can still be reconstructed from a local temporary copy of the project (the ProjectCache folder); Support can check this using the project key.

Prevention

• Disable sync software (e.g., OneDrive, Dropbox) while working on a Citavi Cloud project.
• Deliberately close the project via File > Exit Citavi at the end of a work session. Fully close Citavi instead of just putting the computer into sleep mode. If the computer switches from sleep to fully powered off, e.g., during an automatic Windows update, this can in certain cases lead to data loss.
• Before switching between devices, check that there's a stable internet connection and that the project has been fully saved.
