Restoring the link to a moved or renamed Microsoft Project (.MPP) file in @RISK

 

Problem
You moved or renamed your Excel or Project file, and when you open the workbook in @RISK it no longer links automatically to the associated .MPP file. You cannot restore the link using Project Settings because no Project file is currently open.

 

Solution
You can manually re-establish the link by creating or editing a named range called RiskMPPPath in the Excel workbook. This name tells @RISK where to find the Project file.

 

Steps to restore the link
Open the Excel workbook. Go to Formulas and select Name Manager. Look for a name called RiskMPPPath (with three consecutive P’s). If it exists, select it and click Edit. If it does not exist, click New and create it. In the Refers to field, enter the full path and filename of the Project file, enclosed in quotes, for example:
="C:\Users\Sanjay\Desktop\Simple Risk Register.mpp"
Click OK, then Close the Name Manager. Save the workbook, close it, and reopen it. You do not need to exit Excel.

 

Troubleshooting
If the RiskMPPPath name exists but the Edit button is grayed out, the worksheet may be protected. Right-click the sheet tab and select Unprotect Sheet. If that option does not appear, the workbook itself may be protected or opened as read-only. Make sure the workbook is not protected and is editable, then try again.
