As a Citavi site license user, you are automatically entitled to a license for the most current version of Citavi. Since November 2024 this is Citavi 7. If your university has a Citavi Web and Desktop Bundle license, you will be able to use Citavi 7, Citavi 6 and Citavi Web.

You may, however, be forced to use an earlier version of Citavi, due to, for example,  your team working with it. In these cases it may be necessary to use Citavi 5, 4, 3 or 2.

Your Citavi Account allows site license users to request license keys for previous Citavi versions:

1. Log in to your Citavi account under www.citavi.com/login.
2. Important! If you have not yet verified your new Citavi 7 or Citavi Web and Desktop Bundle licence, please activate this license first by clicking on the licence and then following the instructions in the right-hand column.
3. Once the new licence for Citavi 7 / the Citavi Bundle license has been activated, click New License at the bottom of the page.
4. Select Request a license key for an earlier version of Citavi (screenshot).
5. Select the version you want to use.
6. Copy the license key to the clipboard.
7. Important! If you already use a license for Citavi 5 or earlier and your existing campus agreement has been renewed, contact Citavi Support and include the email address stored in your account. Support will delete your existing Citavi 5 (or earlier) license from your account. Only then can you request a new license for Citavi 5.

Citavi  5, 4, 3, and 2 require the following steps to enter your license key:

1. Start Citavi.
2. On the Welcome Screen, click License.
3. Click Enter a license key.
4. Confirm the license agreement and click Finish.
5. Citavi will automatically recognize and enter the license key.
6. Close Citavi and then restart it to unlock your projects.
