Background

NVivo for Windows includes a converter that will convert the following:

• Older versions of project files to newer versions
• Mac files (.nvpx) to Windows files (.nvp)

If you want to open/convert/upload an older version of an NVivo project (like NVivo 12) into a newer version (like NVivo 15), make sure it can still be opened in the older version first before attempting to open it in the newer version.

 

Reasons for Not Being Able to Open or Convert NVivo Project Files

If your file meets either of the criteria above, an error in the conversion indicates corruption of your project file. 

If you are on Windows, you should launch the older version of NVivo (if possible) without opening the file and go to File->Help->Compact and Repair and select your file in the Browse window.  Once this completes, open a new, blank project file and import your file into it.  

If you are on a Mac, please launch the older version of NVivo (if possible) without opening the file and go to File->Compact Project and select your file in the Browse window.  Once this completes, open a new, blank project file and import your file into it.

If you no longer have access to the older version, in order to convert an older NVivo Mac file to a newer NVivo Windows format, the file needs to be converted to the older NVivo Windows format first.
