Can't Find File After Conversion to a New Version of NVivo

Background

When an NVivo project file is opened in a new version of the software, you will be prompted to convert the file to the new version's database format.

• If NVivo displays a warning that the converted file won't be accessible in the older version, please note that the original file is maintained so there is no impact on it.
• You can safely proceed.
• NVivo will create and open the new converted file. 

Location of the Converted File:

The default location for NVivo files is the Documents folder on your C: or Mac drive. 

If you are unable to locate it, you can use Windows File Explorer or the Mac Finder to locate it. 

If you can't remember the name of the file, you can search for the file extension.  Windows files end in ".nvp" and Mac files end in ".nvpx"

 

Converted File Naming Convention

The new file will be named as the original with the NVivo release number appended at the end (in parentheses) to distinguish it from the original.

Example:  myproject(NVivo R1).nvp

If you convert again, the next version will be appended to the filename.

Example:  myproject(NVivo R1) (R14.23.0).nvp

NOTE: This new filename can be changed at any time in File Explorer (Windows) or the Finder (Mac) to avoid confusion.
