The Impact of Design on Online Surveys Engagement

Many organizations conducting online surveys face a significant challenge: low respondent engagement and completion rates. Surveys often suffer from being visually unappealing, cluttered, and difficult to navigate, which leads to poor participation. As a result, the quality of the collected data can be damaged, making it difficult to deliver valuable insights. This issue also hinders the ability to attract new online projects, as potential clients become wary of low response rates and unreliable data.

One solution to cope with this challenge is to improve the design of online surveys, which significantly enhances respondent engagement by creating a better user experience. Some of these design improvements suggested in this article not only lead to higher completion rates and better data quality but also enhance client confidence, ultimately attracting more projects and providing richer insights.

Brand Personalization

• Incorporate your company’s logo and branding to maintain brand consistency.
• Effective Use of Color: Using a thoughtful color scheme can personify the survey to your brand, making the survey more attractive and distinct rather than using a defaulted design.

Layout and Readability

As cluttered surveys might deter respondents from taking part in it, improving the layout and readability of CAWI surveys is crucial for enhancing respondent engagement and data quality. Key design improvements include:

• Clear and Intuitive Design: A clean, uncluttered layout with a logical flow helps respondents navigate the survey easily.
• Readable Fonts: Selecting easy-to-read fonts and appropriate font sizes ensures that all respondents, including those with visual impairments, can comfortably read and respond to the survey.
• Mobile and Device Compatibility - Ensure your survey looks good and functions well on all devices, including smartphones, desktop monitors and tablets.

Create your own CAWI theme and apply it in multiple surveys using STG CAWI theme editor. Within the Editor, choose your logo, color scheme, fonts’ type & size and other background settings.

Further enhance your survey’s visuals using custom CSS, allowing you to adjust each component appearing throughout the survey.

Engagement and Interactivity

Enhancing engagement and interactivity in CAWI surveys is essential for improving respondent participation and data quality. As Engagement means making the survey interesting and enjoyable so that respondents are more likely to complete it, Interactivity involves using features that allow respondents to interact with the survey in various ways, making the experience more dynamic and less monotonous. The following suggestions aims to contribute in both aspects:

• Engaging Visuals: Use relevant images, icons, and graphics to make the survey more engaging. Ensure they are high-quality and not distracting.
• Interactive Elements: Use sliders, star ratings, and interactive question and render modes to make the survey experience more dynamic.
• Progress Indicators: Include a progress bar so respondents know how much of the survey is left. This can help reduce drop-offs.

Single Choice Grid - Default Forcing respondents to scroll down and spend more time operating the survey.

Single Choice Grid - Expanded List render mode The list indicates the progress of the respondent without investing time on scrolling

This example uses the same question, with the differences between a simple Single Choice question to Heatmap question, increasing the interactivity level of the survey:

Engagement Monitoring

Now that you modified the survey's visuals, it's time to inspect its progress and identify specific question related issues. SurveyToGo:'s online dashboard - Dooblo Insights, lets you track the overall productivity and see where respondents are struggling throughout the survey.

In order to understand the questions where respondents are currently on the survey, check the "Incomplete Statistics" under the "Completion Statistics" node:

Conclusions

Clean layouts with readable fonts make surveys easier to navigate and understand, reducing respondent fatigue. Consistent branding, along with engaging visuals and interactive elements like sliders and star ratings, captures attention and makes the survey more enjoyable, boosting engagement and interactivity. Including progress indicators helps respondents see how much of the survey is left, encouraging them to complete it. Mobile optimization ensures that surveys are accessible on all devices, resulting in increasing participation rates.
