Expression Question

Overview

Expression questions are used for writing script's inside of them and\or returning values, for example:
"Calc the respondents points and return them" (Hidden text)

Question Node

In the Survey Tree, an Empty Question appears as the following question node:

The Tabs

• Each question has a set of tabs
• Each tab is used for different configurations.

The View Tab

In the view tab you can configure the basic components of a question, such as its body text.

Question Type & General Settings

In the main panel, you can set:

• Question type
• Text color
• Formatting

In the bottom panel, you can:

• Clear the questions content
• Add a new question of the same type.
• Navigate between questions.

The Question Tab

Under the Question tab, within the View section, you can define both the Question Body Text and any Surveyor Instructions that should accompany the question.

Defining the Question Text

The text entered in the question text box becomes the main body text displayed to the respondent during the interview.

The Surveyor Instructions field allows you to provide guidance or instructions specifically for the interviewer. These instructions are displayed using different formatting to distinguish them from the question text shown to respondents.

The Answers Tab

In an Expression Question, the Answers tab is where you define the expression script that will be evaluated to calculate and return a value.

The value returned by this script becomes the answer to the Expression Question.

Note: When exporting survey data, the value stored for an Expression Question is the value returned by the script defined in the Answers tab.

The Rules Tab

Under the Rules tab, you can define the logic associated with the Expression Question, including:

* Entrance Rules – determine whether the question is displayed.
* Validation Rules – specify conditions that must be met before proceeding.
* Branching Rules – control the flow of the survey based on the defined logic.

The Scripts Tab

The Scripts tab is not intended for use with Expression Questions and may lead to unexpected behavior in certain scenarios.

For Expression Questions, place all calculation and expression logic in the Answers tab only.

The Variables Tab

The Variables tab is used to configure variable-related properties for the question.

* Variable Name – The name of the column representing this question in exported datasets.
* Missing Value – The value assigned to the question if it is skipped or not answered.
* Short ID – A shortened identifier displayed in the Survey Tree next to the Question Index to improve readability. Short IDs can also be used as the basis for variable names.

Variable names can be referenced in scripts instead of question indexes by using the appropriate functions, resulting in more readable and maintainable code.

The Advanced Tab

The advanced tab allows you to set & configure more advanced properties of a question.

Please note that the expression question and the following question should be marked as 'Starts a New Page'

Variables and Exporting Definitions

If in the first interview my expression returned 3 and in the second interview it returned 5, this is how it will be exported:
