Using VRef() and VarName()

Overview

VRef() and VarName() are built-in SurveyToGo functions that simplify working with question variable names and question indexes.

These functions allow you to reference questions by their variable names instead of relying on the system-assigned question indexes, making scripts easier to read and maintain.

VRef()

The VRef() function accepts a question variable name and returns the corresponding question index.

For example:

VRef("qrc2bc");

This returns the index of the question whose variable name is qrc2bc.

Using VRef() allows your scripts to reference questions by the variable names you define rather than by fixed question indexes assigned by the system.

VarName()

The VarName() function performs the reverse operation. It accepts a question index and returns the corresponding question variable name.

For example:

VarName(37);

This returns the variable name of the question whose index is 37.

Important

VRef() and VarName() work only with question variable names and question indexes.

They cannot be used with answer variable names or answer indexes.

The attached sample survey (.srv) demonstrates the basic usage of both functions.
