Sonia: Changing Placement Group Subject

Introduction

NOTE: Terminology used below is Sonia default terminology.

The “placement group subject” is the subject that was used to add the student to the placement group. For example, EDU 100.

Some programs need to work with students before they actually enroll in the placement-related subject and therefore add the students to a placement group with a different subject.

Another scenario is that a placement group, including the students, had been copied, and the new placement group needs to reflect a different subject.

It is helpful, and sometimes necessary, for the placement group subject to reflect the subject for which the placement experience is being taken. For example, if a student is added to a placement group with EDU 100, but the placement experience for that placement group meets the requirements for EDU 199, the latter is the subject that should be reflected in the placement group.

This accuracy helps the placement officers track registration for this class, especially during the registration and add/drop periods. In addition, the placement group subject is included in some reports and communication placeholders.

Viewing placement group subject

To see which subject was used to add students to a placement group, on the Students page of the placement group, click the Fields button above the grid, to the right. Expand the Student Subject section, and select at least Subject code or Subject name and any additional helpful details, such as Subject status.

These fields will be added to your grid, as below.

In the example below, we see that SWK 5450 was used to add these students to the placement group. All are still enrolled in the class (signified by the E in Subject status), except for Spyder Mann.

Changing the placement group subject

1. On the Students page of the placement group, select all of the students whose subject needs to be changed
2. Click the edit pencil at the right
3. Check the Subject box
4. Select the new subject
5. Edit any other details
6. Click OK
7. Save the placement group

This does not add this subject to the student’s Enrollments. It’s simply an easy way to identify students who are enrolled in the subject.
