Importing Items from Excel

Overview

Importing data from Excel is a fast and efficient way to build or update a SharpCloud story. By copying and pasting structured data into the Data Grid, rows are converted into items and columns into properties.

 

Data Structure in Excel

• Rows → Items

• Columns → Properties (attributes, categories, tags)

The only required column is:

• Name – Defines the item name

If no Category column is included, items are assigned to the first available category.

Key Columns

Name (Required)

• Sets the item name

Category

• Assigns items to categories

• New categories in Excel are automatically created in SharpCloud

External ID (Recommended)

• Unique identifier for each item

• Prevents duplication or overwriting during updates

Attributes

• Each column represents an attribute

  • 

• Attribute types are suggested automatically during import

• Types can be adjusted in the import wizard

• Not all items require values for every attribute

• No limit on the number of attributes

Tags

• Tags can be imported as columns

• Multiple tags can be assigned using comma-separated values

  • 

Tag Groups can be created using this format in the column header:

• Tags.Tag Group Name

Pasting Data into SharpCloud

To import your data:

• Copy data from Excel (e.g. Ctrl + A, then copy)

• Open the Data Grid in SharpCloud

  • 

• Click Paste

In the import process:

• Paste your data into the dialog window

  • 

• Choose a matching method:

  • Name

  • External ID (recommended)

  • Internal ID

Data Wizard

• Appears if new attributes are detected

  • 

• Confirms attribute types (editable)

• Shows a preview of the data

  • 

• Highlights any errors before import

Once confirmed:

• Click OK to import

• Items are created and displayed in the Data Grid

Notes

• Use External ID for reliable updates

• Review data in preview before final import

• Imported data is immediately available across views
