The ribbon at the top of the screen contains common NVivo commands, on 6 tabs. Additional tabs with specialized commands open when project items are opened in the Detail View (and have the focus)—e.g. when you open a video the Video tab is added to the ribbon, with commands specific to videos.

To create more working space you can collapse the ribbon leaving just the tab names visible Minimize ribbon.

Additional commands can be accessed from right-click context menus Context menus.

The Quick Access Toolbar at the top-right of the window allows you to put frequently used commands in one place where they can be easily accessed, without opening a ribbon or menu Quick Access Toolbar.

In the top-right of the NVivo window (beside the Quick Access Toolbar) you can log into your myLumivero account , open this Help file, and rate NVivo or submit feedback .

This panel lists all the items in the currently open project (data files, codes, cases, memos, classifications, saved queries and query results etc.), grouped under categories: Data, Coding, Cases, Notes, Sets, Queries, Visualizations and Reports. The Detail View is the main work area in NVivo, where you code and annotate files, create see-also links, view codes, cases and reports, write memos, and configure and view queries and visualizations.

The Detail View has its own specialized toolbar, across the top of the View, showing menus with commands specific to the type of file open in the View. In addition, when an item is opened in the Detail View and has focus (i.e. you have clicked in it), one or more tabs are added to the ribbon with more commands specific to the file type, e.g. when you open a video the Video tab is added to the ribbon, with specialized commands for videos. You can also use context menus in the Detail View for commands relevant to the selected items Context menus.

The Detail View can be positioned to the right of, or below the List View Change Detail View position.

Editable files open into the Detail View in read-only mode—check Edit in the Detail View toolbar to edit.

You can undock the Detail View if you prefer to work with project items in a separate window Undock the Detail View.

You can open multiple items on different tabs in the Detail View. Close individual tabs with the tab cross symbol or right-click at the top of the tab to close all tabs or close all except the current tab.

NOTE  NVivo uses your computer's default printer settings to format content displayed in the Detail View. Ensure that you have a default printer set (it need not be a physical printer—if you don't have one installed select Microsoft XPS Document Writer).

The Find bar at the top of the List View allows you to search for items in the current project. From the dropdown in the right of the search field select to search:

• Current Folder: the folder currently open in the List View (but not its subfolders)
• Subfolders: the folder currently open in the List View, and its subfolders
• Project: all project items within the entire project
• All Codes: the project codes and cases
• All Files: all data files (imported and created data files, externals and memos)

The Find bar searches project item names—not words inside documents.

You can hide the Find bar Show or hide the Find bar.

The Quick Coding bar is displayed below the Detail View when it contains codable project items. It provides a fast way to code and uncode and allows you to code by nickname Using the Quick Coding bar.

You can hide or undock the Quick Coding bar Show, hide or move the Quick Coding bar.
