Moving or Transferring an NVivo License

If the NVivo license is being transferred to another device, deactivate NVivo from the old one and install and activate it on the new one.  See below for details and additional details and links.

If the NVivo license is being transferred to another user, the following steps should be taken.

1. Deactivate NVivo on the current user's device.
2. Unassign the user (if they were assigned) in the MyLumivero portal.
3. Assign the new user in the portal OR provide them with the NVivo license key (depending on your organizational policy)

Deactivate NVivo

Make sure that you are connected to the Internet to update the deactivation in our licensing system.
If you have an NVivo project open, you must first close the project (File > Close).

NOTE: Make sure ALL installations of NVivo activated by the user have been deactivated.

For NVivo Windows version 13/R1 and higher:
Click on File and go to:

Product Info->Manage License->Deactivate License.

For NVivo Windows version 12
Click on File and go to:

Help>Manage License->Deactivate License.

For NVivo Windows version 11 and older:
Click on File and go to:

Help>Deactivate License.

For NVivo Mac
Click on NVivo->Licensing->Deactivate
Click Yes to confirm. NVivo deactivates the license and displays a message to confirm that NVivo has been deactivated.

Unassign Previous User/Assign New User

For NVivo 13/R1 and higher:
If the license was assigned, the purchaser/license manager should unassign the license from the previous user in the MyLumivero portal and assign it to the new user.

For NVivo Windows 12 and older:
The purchaser should contact us requesting a reset of the license by asking the Lumi AI Assistant to create a case.  This can be done by clicking on the Contact Support button at the bottom of the Lumivero Community Home Page.

Transfer Project Files
Once you’ve installed NVivo on your new computer, you can move your existing NVivo projects there.

NVivo project files are stored by default in the Documents folder of your computer and have a .nvp (NVivo Windows) or .nvpx (NVivo Mac) file extension.

They can be exported to an external storage device (USB/thumb drive, cloud drive etc) to prevent data loss if the old computer is being wiped or trashed.
