Problem

Enabling LaTeX support under Tools > Options > Citation and confirming the automatic generation of BibTeX keys triggers the following error message:

System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot generate the BibTeX key because
Project.Engine.Settings.BibTeXCitationKey.IsTeXEnabled is false

After this, LaTeX support remains disabled. Even if key generation is skipped and only OK is confirmed, the setting is not saved.

Cause

This is a known synchronization issue: when LaTeX support is enabled for the first time, the setting is briefly and incorrectly reset before it can be saved. As a result, the subsequent generation of BibTeX keys fails.

Workaround

Two options are currently recommended:

1. Enabling LaTeX support via Citavi Web (only available with a Windows + Web bundle license), instead of in the desktop application. The setting then syncs correctly with the desktop project.
2. Switching to Citavi 7.2. This version is not affected by the issue. Since the regular download link automatically installs the latest version, contacting Citavi Support is required to obtain the correct installer for version 7.2.

Will this be fixed?

Yes, a permanent fix is already in progress. Until the update is released, one of the workarounds listed above should be used.
