Problem

You can't select a custom citation style in the Citavi Word Add-In.

Cause

You are using the Citavi Assistant, not the Citavi Word Add-In.

Solution

The Assistant was developed to be used in combination with Citavi Web. You cannot add custom citation styles in Citavi Web.

Please do not use the Assistant, but the Citavi Word Add-In instead. The Add-In should be installed automatically when installing Citavi and be shown as a tab in Word.

In case you do not see the tab, please follow these steps to be able to work with the Citavi Word Add-In again.

Step 1: Making sure there is no Word process running in the background

1. Close Word.

2. Open the Windows Task-Manager: CTRL+ALT+DEL.

3. Make sure that there are no Word processes running in the background, look for the entries “Microsoft Word” or “Winword.exe”. If you find a Word process, end it by selecting the process and clicking on “[End process]”.

Step 2: Uninstall the Word Add-In:

1. Open the Windows Control Panel.

2. Click "Programs and Features".

3. Select "Citavi", and then click "Change". The Citavi Setup starts.

4. Click "Next", then select "Modify" and click "Next" again.

5. Click the symbol next to Word Add-In and then select "This feature, and all subfeatures, will not be available".

6. Click "Next" and continue through the Setup.

Step 3: Install the Word Add-In:

1. Open the Windows Control Panel.

2. Click "Programs and Features".

3. Select "Citavi", and then click "Change". The Citavi Setup starts.

4. Click "Next", then select "Modify" and click "Next" again.

5. Click the symbol next to Word Add-In and then select "This feature, and all subfeatures, will be installed on local hard drive".

6. Click "Next" and continue through the Setup.

Special case: Mac users / working exclusively with Citavi Web

The Word Add-In is only available on Windows. Users who work exclusively with Citavi Web and the Citavi Assistant in Word (e.g., on a Mac) and do not have their own or institution-specific citation style ("house style") available in Citavi Web cannot upload or import it themselves. A direct import of custom .ccs files is not supported in Citavi Web.

For an institution-specific style to also be usable in Citavi Web and in Word via the Assistant, the following process is required:

1. The user contacts the people at their institution responsible for the style.
2. Those responsible contact Citavi Support and submit the style for review. This requires a contact email address (ideally a functional/departmental address) as well as the associated citation guidelines or a link to them.
3. Once reviewed by Citavi, the style is released as a public style and then becomes available both in Citavi Web and in the Windows desktop version.

A direct self-service upload of custom styles in Citavi Web is not possible, since only reviewed styles are made publicly available. Once the style is released, Windows users benefit as well, as they no longer need to save it individually.
