XLSTAT: Process: Moderation and Mediation in Excel

Dataset for Example

The attached dataset, from 20 industry employees, includes measures of empowering leadership (based on work meaning, decision participation, confidence, autonomy), job well-being, and organizational commitment. We will use the dataset to explain organizational commitment by empowering leadership, considering workplace well-being as a potential mediator.

Setting Up

• Open XLSTAT.

• Click on the Marketing/ Marketing tools menu and select the Process: moderation and mediation feature.

• In the Process: Moderation and Mediation dialog box, select model 4 for mediation.

• Choose organizational commitment as the Dependent variable and empowering leadership as the Explanatory variable.

• Select Well-Being as the Mediator variable to test its mediating effect. Check Variable labels since headers are included.

• Click on the OK button to launch the computations.

• The results are displayed on a new Excel sheet.

Interpreting the Results

The "Direct effect of X on Y" table gives the value of the estimate of the direct effect of X on Y as well as various elements (confidence interval, Student's t) that allow us to conclude that the direct effect is not significant.

The "Indirects effects of X on Y" table provides details about the indirect effect present in the model. Here, since the value 0 is not included in the confidence interval, the indirect effect is considered significant.

Conclusion

The mediation model formed between empowering leadership, job well-being, and organizational commitment was found to be significant, meaning that there is a causal relationship between these 3 variables: empowering leadership has an effect on job well-being, and the latter then influences organizational commitment.
